Chapter 9

November 21st

As the days went by, frost started appearing on the morning grass and the windows. It was getting colder by the day and the outside projects were getting a lot of attention.

Nathan, as the only plumber, had managed to wrangle together a good group to help him put in a septic tank for the trailers. Nika’s backhoe did most of the work, but Nathan had to get creative with the supplies on hand. Since no one had thought to grab a small tank back when they were still doing runs, he made do by screwing a thick pool liner inside a box made from sheet metal. He plumbed the trailer septic hoses onto couplings that directed them to a bigger pipe attached to the tank and finished with a straight pipe capped on top for when it was time to empty it. It wasn’t pretty, but it worked.

By the time Nathan was done with the backhoe, Justin and the brothers had cut into the hill and braced it as far as they could go. They ended up being able to dig out room for four houses and were excited to keep going. They left more than enough room on each side of the houses for the hill to act as insulation.

They needed to get the digging done before the ground froze over. The backhoe would still get the job done, it would just take longer once that happened. The sod cuts from the hill were carefully placed on a tarp and covered with painter’s cloth. They also cut outward twenty by twenty feet from where each house would be and saved the sod from that. The hill was approximately sixty feet at its high point, a hundred and forty feet long, and a hundred and twenty feet deep, giving them plenty of room to make decent-sized homes.

Justin paused his work to chat with Grayson. “Can I ask what brought you three to the area?”

“How far back do you want me to go?” Grayson asked with a laugh. “Because my family has some history.”

“History is good.”

Grayson smirked. “You asked for it. Our family spread out after the Clearances in 1860. We kept in touch and met whenever we could. One uncle went to America at age seventeen and headed west. He settled in the Rocky Mountains among a handful of Scottish Highlanders in the area and ended up marrying one of them. They had seven kids, four who reached maturity. Those kids married other Highlanders, and so on. Our ancestors wrote letters back and forth, sent messages over the telegraph, and made phone calls after that. Our cousin, I guess you can call him James, got a job as an engineer at the Hanford Nuclear facility and moved to Richland, Washington. We stayed put until the laird who owned our land sold that parcel to a developer, violating his oath to us. Up there, we still made our oaths to rent the land and keep the peace. His part was to protect us and provide the land for our use.
